The one thing that I always think of when it comes to the possibility of “the end” because of impact that humans have had on the environment is how to not complete scare people. I feel like throughout my education, whenever the talk about the massive impact humans are having on the Earth’s out look, I feel as if I leave the discussion feeling incredibly discouraged and hopeless. The scare tactics that a lot of teachers/professors use is not helpful in inspiring hope and change in young people, at least from my perspective. I think that presenting the facts in a less depressing way is going to be the most successful in creating change. I liked how the American Museum of Natural History’s exhibit on increasing climate change was able to graphically and interactively show the rising carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere that is educating people, but not being very in your face about it. The more exhibits and talks and conversations about the anthropocene and the human impact on nature that can happen in a more gentle fashion, the more willing I think some people will be in changing their ways. Classes like this one are one way to do this, and I think that more classes like this around the country, and world for that matter, would be a step in the right direction.
