South Africa

After a January visit in 2002 to Cape Town as part of Colby’s Study Abroad program to reconnaissance for a ColbyBatesBowdoin Cape Town program that was run in 2005, Prof. Gastaldo has continued to research, teach, and enjoy the post-Apartheid South Africa.  He has been taking Colby students to the country since 2003, where they have participated in original research as part of an international team of scientists.  Each student has undertaken a field-based project which have been used either as a capstone Independent Study experience or Honors Thesis.  Many students are senior or junior co-authors on peer-reviewed professional papers published in leading international geoscience journals.   Near annual one-month field excursions, coupled with long-term residencies in the country under the CBB program and a Fulbright Scholar Award, have provided him the opportunity to travel to many different parts of the country.  Images from an array of trips are highlighted in this section.
