When I heard that Dr. Aronova was coming to talk about social constructions and science among other things, I was interested and excited. We talk a lot about how different people, places, times, etc. process different pieces of information that come from different sciences. And we talked about this a lot during her visit.
I think that the visits that different professors and people from around the country and world have made to our class have been very interesting. They are all quite similar though, at least in the fact that they make me think about certain aspects of everyday life that normally I would not spend much time thinking about. This was also the case for Dr. Aronova’s visit. She talked about the social sciences and natural sciences in a way that I have not thought about before. She specially did this in her reading and the texts that we were supposed to read for class.
I found that the talks were also particularly interesting as she talked about certain people were aware of certain information but because of the time and the place, they were not allowed to think for themselves about the information at hand. I wonder if this would still be the case if something were to occur in America today. But then the more I think about it the more likely it seems. It seems as though the information that comes to us through the internet and more media outlets are pretty controlled. The information that is put out and widely received and accepted by everyone comes from very educated and well recognized people. I believe that it would be feasible for them to potentially withhold information from the general public, something similar to what happened in the Soviet Union during this time.
Although this is a very pessimistic view and I hope that something like this would never happen, or at least if something serious and something that needed to be understood and known by the general public were to be found or occur, then people would understand and disclose the information.
Her talk was very interesting and made me think about the origin of how information is spread in the scientific community, and how this changes based on the time period and location of the information. It has been quite similar to other talks with professors and it seems to be a topic that can be talked about over multiple topics.
