Abukar Adan, Research Associate 

Abukar Adan will graduate from Colby College in May of 2017. He was born in Ethiopia and raised in Portland, Maine. Abukar is pursuing a double major in government and education, with a concentration in schools, society and culture. Outside of the classroom, he serves as the director of news at WMHB Radio, an editorial assistant for the Colby Magazine and a blogger for the Huffington Post. He was also a public media summer intern at Maine Public Radio, where he currently freelances. After graduation, Abukar hopes to become an educator and a journalist.

Maddie Andrews, Research Associate

MaddieMaddie will graduate from Colby in May of 2017. She was born and raised on the coast of southern Maine, where she has spent her summers working as an emergency department tech and clerk. She is a biology major and an education minor, and she intends to pursue a medical career following graduation from Colby. Maddie has been an active member of the college community; she has participated in hall staff, been a first year orientation leader, and is currently a captain of the Colby women’s crew team.

Marina Arcuschin de Oliveira, Research Associate

Marina

Marina Arcuschin graduated from Colby College in December of 2015. She was born in São Paulo, Brazil and lived two years in Costa Rica, while studying at the United World Colleges Costa Rica, where she finished high school. While at Colby, she majored in educational studies and had a minor in anthropology. She is now living in an Eco-Village in Tumacácori, AZ, where she teaches at a progressive school for children and teens.

Pat Dickert, Research Associate

Pat Dickert will graduate from Colby College in May of 2018 with a major in Economics and a minor in Education.  Born in Hatfield, MA, Pat is actively involved in all parts of the Colby Community.  He is a captain of the Colby Men’s Basketball team, facilitates student-athlete discussions on sexual violence through MVP (Mules’ Violence Prevention), and serves as a mentor for CCAK (Colby Cares about Kids).  This summer, Pat made headlines on ESPN, CBS, FOX, and Taiwanese national media after posting an Instagram video of himself dunking from the free throw line. After graduation, Pat will pursue a professional basketball career overseas.

Patrick Stewart, Research Associate

Pat Stewart will graduate from Colby College in May of 2016 with a double major in Economics and Education. A native of Bangor Maine, Pat has been an active member of the Colby Community. He plays on the Colby Men’s Basketball, facilitates events for “Mentors against Violence” and works as a research assistant to Professor Adam Howard. Pat has spent the last three summers working with the Upward Bound Math Science Program at the University of Maine in Orono as a hall manager and residential counselor. Pat also spent time in Honduras during previous summers installing water filters and contributing to water filtration research. After graduating from Colby, Pat plans to teach and coach basketball, while continuing to work on this research project.

 

Hoa Nguyen, Research Associate

A Colby Presidential Scholar, Hoa Nguyen will graduate from the college in May of 2020. He grew up in the south of Vietnam and spent 5 years studying in Singapore before coming to the States. Hoa is majoring in Economics-Mathematics with a concentration in financial markets. An outdoorsy person, Hoa does rock climbing, hikes and plays frisbee in his free time. He plans to work in the investment banking industry after graduation.

Gerald Owusu, Research Associate

Gerald Owusu will graduate from Colby College in May of 2017. He was born in Kumasi, Ghana and moved to the United States with his family when he was 10 years old. While at Colby, he is majoring in global studies with a double minor in managerial economics and philosophy. Gerald has spent the past two summers working at J.P. Morgan and plans to trade securities for the Investment Bank after he graduates.

Sangay Thinley, Research Associate

Sangay Thinley is originally from the tiny Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan and graduated from Colby College in the spring of 2015 with an economics major with a financial markets concentration and a minor in education studies. Prior to this, Sangay attended the Lester B. Pearson United World College of the Pacific in British Columbia, Canada. She currently works as a Research Analyst for the Economy and Finance Division at QED Group in Bhutan and has been a part of Professor Howard’s research team since 2014.

Luke Westman, Research Associate

Luke Westman graduated from Colby College in May of 2016. He was born in Evanston, Illinois and grew up in Newton, Massachusetts. Luke was a French studies and biology double major as well as a captain on the men’s basketball team. He worked as a Senior Admissions Fellow at Colby leading information sessions and interviewing prospective students. Luke is currently teaching French at Millbrook School in New York.
