Biggest questions left unanswered

(Morning Sentinel) We will never know what one elderly couple said to each other in their Skowhegan bedroom before the husband shot his ailing wife and then himself.

The couple, 85-year-old Barbour and 75-year-old Marie Flewellen, left no suicide note. Barbour’s last known words were made to Skowhegan dispatch when he called to report two “mercy killings” on the morning of May 24.

What we do know is that the elderly are the most likely to commit suicide in both Maine and the United States. The greatest percentage of people who kill themselves are older white men. In Maine, of the approximately 190 people who kill themselves each year, about 80 percent are male.
