Carl Jefferson Weber (Curator 1940-1958)

Professor Carl Weber (1894-1966) served as our first Curator of Rare Books. A renowned Thomas Hardy scholar, he built the foundations of Special Collections through personal dedication and a wide range of professional relationships.

CARL WEBER AS DONOR

Special Collections includes many letters written to or by Carl Weber that together document the development of our collections. The materials were donated to Special Collections by Weber directly or by his wife, Clara. A notable collection presented by Weber comprised his many editions of A E Housman’s A Shropshire Lad, as reported in a March 1946 article in the Colby Library Quarterly commemorating the 50th anniversary of the poem’s first publication.
