Song appears across English and Chinese archives under several names, including Song Chin Foh, Chin Foh Song, Carl Song, Song Junfu, and 宋君复. These variations show how Chinese students and returned professionals were recorded across missionary archives, American college records, Colby alumni directories, Chinese university histories, and later sports biographies.
During World War II and the immediate postwar years, Colby alumni records also show a renewed concern with identifying and remembering alumni connected to China. In correspondence with Joseph Coburn Smith of The Colby Alumnus, Arthur G. Robinson tried to connect the Carl Song mentioned in Heaven Below with the Colby alumnus recorded as Chin Foh Sung, while also urging Colby to seek news about its men in China. His letters show an effort to preserve Colby’s institutional memory of alumni at a moment when missionary work, YMCA networks, and U.S.-China relations had become newly visible after the war.
