Herring Gut Learning Center
“After a year, two years, of working with all of us, they develop a relationship with us, they start to trust us.”
Herring Gut Learning Center, located in Port Clyde, Maine, works with over 1000 students every year, using marine science and aquaponics as teaching tools to instill within students an appreciation for the environment, a love for learning and the values of hard work. This video focuses on a group of middle school students who are generally struggling in the public school system who come to Herring Gut twice a week for their science curriculum. In addition to classroom lessons, these students are involved in all aspects of the aquaponics system, including maintenance of the fish tanks, water quality testing, harvesting of produce, coordinating with customers and selling at Farmer’s markets. Through hands-on experiences, students build confidence and acquire lifelong skills such as teamwork and the ability to balance budget.
