Many members of the Foster family graduated from Colby College, including John H. Foster’s grandfather, father, son, wife, father-in-law, and daughter. Both his father and father-in-law went to China as missionaries, and he met his future wife, Helen Thomas, while in college. After getting married, they went to Changsha to do missionary work together. Their son, John Thomas Foster, also had deep ties with China. During World War II, he became a member of the United States 14th Air Force (the Flying Tigers) and helped fight against the Japanese invasion in southwestern China.
