John H. Foster graduated from Colby in 1913, and in the fall of the same year entered the Medical School of the University of Pennsylvania to pursue advanced medical studies and prepare to go to China as a medical missionary in a few years. In 1917, he received his M.D. degree. At the time of graduation, coinciding with the United States declaring war on Germany, Foster, like many of his classmates, chose to enlist in the army.
