After graduating from Colby and serving briefly at the YMCA in Kansas City, Robinson sailed for Shanghai in September 1913. His first assignment was a year of language study in Nanking, followed by service at the first Boys Camp in China at Wo Fu Ssu, the “Temple of the sleeping Buddha.” The fluency he gained there set him apart from many foreign workers and made possible the close friendships with Chinese students and officials.
