The Future of Medical Technology

Biomedical engineering is an interesting field that manifests itself more heavily every day in our society. They work with artificial intelligence, creating technology that can change the way we experience life. They can create replacements of body parts with brain chips that control the movements of the prosthetics. The work done in these Biomedical engineering labs has the possibility to change the world in ways we have never seen before. However, only if we find a way to combat the moral dilemmas concerning bioethics and bias. There are a couple bioethical concerns with the biomedical engineering field. Some include the use of animal testing, the use of too much technology in someones body, and the mis-use of medical ethical principles. The biomedical engineering ethics are concerning. Topics such as human enhancements are worrisome. These create a moral issue because these traits have the potential to lead to the creation of humans that are more technology than human. Another concern, bias, tends to manifest itself in scientific work, especially when working with technology as powerful as the ones used in the biomedical engineering field. Through diversifying the group of engineers in the lab, these groups are able to learn more about how others interpret certain data and take research.

Brain interface that allows patients to use their own brainwaves to control a prosthetic limb. However, this process and technology can be seen as invasive and slightly immoral. One of the most interesting parts of this project is how over the years the teams ability to do more invasive procedures has rapidly increased. For example, the project started with testing on smaller animals and then moved on to testing on larger animals such as dogs. After receiving positive results from implanting devices in these animals, they were able to move onto human testing. Technology like this can completely alter how someone experiences life. Being able to give the prosthetics to patients and visibly see how this technology affects their lives is an exciting aspect to this job. It is truly thrilling for the engineer to see the results of their project when they get to see how it changes someone’s life.

The biomedical engineering field is such an incredible field which allows us in society to move forward with creating many products that can be used to change people’s lives for the better. Learning about implanting brain chips to help sense brain movement seems like only a possibility in the future. However, is it morally okay to allow chips with data stored in them to be implanted into people’s brains? Is it allowed to have artificial intelligence and technology controlled by an alternative source placed in a sacred part of your body, the brain? I believe that the good outweighs the bad. If we are able to create these devices to help prevent heart attacks and improve the quality of life for patients struggling with diseases and disorders, we should continue with this ground breaking research and create these products. These products are the solution to future medicine. The intersection of math, science, and technology will help create crucial inventions.
