Maine girls looking for nice Jewish boys, Jewish soldiers from all over the country seeking camaraderie, and non-Jewish soldiers merely looking to have a good time gathered for social events held at Portland’s Jewish Community Center. Thousands of soldiers passed through Portland during World War II, as the city was home to the American port closest to Europe.
