Far from their homes and congregations, Jewish servicemen received spiritual comfort from Rabbi Harold H. Gordon and the “flying Torah,” on loan from Congregation Beth Israel in Bangor.  From its base at Dow Air Field, this Torah scroll traveled more than 75,000 miles during World War II.
