DEFINITION

A preposition is a word that links nouns, pronouns, verbs, and phrases to other nouns, pronouns, verbs, and phrases.

CATEGORIZATION

Prepositions can be either simple or complex. There are nine simple prepositions in the Italian language which are considered complex when combined with a definite article. 

Preposition Purpose
DI (in/of) Expressing ownership, composition, or origin
DA (from) Expressing origin, function, or time
A (at, to) Expressing location spatially (cities/towns and places) or temporally (time)
IN (in, on) Expressing location spatially (countries/regions and places) and transport
SU (on) Expressing a topic or physical position
CON (with) Expressing with
TRA/FRA (between) Expressing between (spatially or temporally) or duration of time
PER (for) Expressing a destination or receiver of something

EXAMPLES::

Questo è la vestita di seta di Maria.
This is Maria’s silk dress.
Expresses: Ownership, composition

Puoi fare la spesa dalle due alle tre? Vorrei comprare un costume da bagno.
Can you go shopping from two to three? I want to buy a swimsuit.
Expresses: Time, function

La partita di calcio inizia all’uno allo stadio a Boston.
The soccer game starts at one at the stadium in Boston.

I like coffee with sugar.

PLACEMENT

Prepositions usually come after the verb and before the indirect object. Never end a sentence with a preposition!
