An adverb is a word that describes, modifies, or qualifies verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs.
Adverbs can be categorized according to what question they answer:

Adverbs usually come directly after the verb, however some adverbs (such as mai, già and ancora) are placed between the auxiliary verb and the past participle with compound tenses.
