Wood applied for his intention of volunteer work abroad via Yale University, and while he was studying at Colby College, he showed his great interest in Chinese society. He took a class called “The Chinese Revolution”. Also, He showed is intention of learning social service in Harvard University and theology in Newton Theological University. His motivation fits into a larger ideological and institutional push toward overseas missions because he actively participated in YMCA at Colby and he was already a participant in SVM service so he would like to realize his objectives based on his love of Chinese people and interests in Chinese society. He applied for the volunteer work for three times and eventually he was accepted as a member.
