What Did the Students Learn?
At the end of the program, learners were able to enjoy some aspects of Chinese arts and use the target language to have basic conversation about themselves, daily activities, and art.
- Students were able to use single words and memorized phrases to talk about the activities, feelings, and other aspects of the characters in two stories from the Three Kingdoms period.
- Looking at images or watching videos of Chinese dance, opera, or music, students were able to count, to describe simple activities and objects, and to tell characters’ emotions.
- They used authentic art materials to tell about their feelings, their needs, and their likes and dislikes using single words and memorized phrases.
- They were able use their own handmade Chinese-style fan, Beijing opera mask, and handscroll paintings to talk about themselves and their families and friends with simple, culturally appropriate Chinese words and memorized phrases.
- They were able to introduce themselves, to describe family roles and simple biographical details, to ask others about themselves, and to tell a simple story about an outdoor journey.
- Students were be able to write 10 characters using “magic” disappearing water-ink pads and Chinese brush and ink.
