The design and interface is really cute, featuring a panda, of course. Also, the content is designed according to categories like food, numbers and colors—so you get the learning in a rather systematic way while having some fun. Free

Kids Learn Mandarin (iphone)      (Android version)

With Kids Learn Mandarin, children can learn to speak, read and write 200 words through a series of lessons and games.  Reward stickers and music videos keep the learning fun.  One lesson and 8 games are included with additional lessons available for download.

Lingu Pinguin (iphone)        (Android version)

An interactive English-Chinese picture dictionary with audio. The vocabulary themes are animals, transportation, food, face & body, farm, toys, nature, clothes, and house.  There is a quiz section for review. Pronunciation: standard Mandarin Chinese.  Audio options: English and Mandarin Chinese.

Chinese Flashcards (iphone)

This is a flashcard app with very nice illustration for young children. I like that the Chinese characters are included in each card.  It is important that you select “Mandarin Chinese” in the language setting to hear the correct pronunciation.  This publisher appears to create apps only for iphone. Audio options: English, Mandarin Chinese, and Cantonese.

Fun Chinese (iphone)       (Android version)

This is a game-based Chinese learning app with a 15 different languages combination.  That means the game instruction is in your selected language.  If you set “English” as your preferred language you will see “English” instruction in the game.  The teaching material is in Chinese.   This can be helpful for families who speak languages other than Chinese.  Theme words and phrases are the main content for this app with a few simple sentences from the free version.

Gus On The Go (iphone) 

It is well-designed and with high quality graphics and audio recording.  You will find one app titled “Taiwan Mandarin” for traditional Chinese writing. This publisher does not appear to have a Mandarin app for Android systems.
