SYRUP, LTT, COMMITTEE HEADS: Notes 4/27

FUN TIMES WE’VE HAD!

Grace and Sam and Spencer and Eric and Chloe and Hannah all skied!

Logan competed with the Woodsmen team at the spring meet at Dartmouth (COC legends were met! maple sugarer!) – Girls placed 1st, so congrats to the best team in the northeast, and guys placed 4th!

Hannah, Chloe and Brittany went for a night hike (oooOOOOh) – kinda cloudy but still really nice.

Colby Cares Day:

  • John T and chloe and hannah and brittany and ben raked a lot of bags of leaves!
  • Ryan Cole went to the messalonski with EnviroCo and cleaned up 4 bags of trash! No TVs this time, which is actually a good thing! ***AND he added Hannah Bossi on Facbeook!
  • Eric C and Teddy went to Viles Arboretum in Augusta and dragged a bunch of half trees around a field.

Molly and Kat cartwheeled on the colby green for about an hour.

Owens DIDN’T GO OUTSIDE but Colby hosted an event with the National Women and Girls Sports Day. Nick P was a pretty good gal! The shirt for this event is really extensive, full text and citations attached (jk)

Their inauguration will be forthcoming, barring any serious reservations put forth by members of the Outing Club community, before, say, tonight.

in other news…

Accomplishments by the team:

  • REGGAE FEST! A raucous time was had by all, obviously.
  • Nick and Alyssa and Lydia hiked up Maiden’s Cliff (Megunticook was too deep in snow, so no cigar). Then the beach! Both lobster shacks were closed, so they went to chappy’s chowdah house instead. Cry me a river.
  • Sam played wiffleball outside today! Sam’s team won. Hannah lost. Condolences, Hannah.

Present happenings of the team:

  • Sugaring: Lots of boiling was done this weekend, so thanks to all who helped out! We’re now in the process of continuing to boil in Mary Low, and transporting sap and syrup inside.  We’re close!!
  • Leader Training Trip: Scheduled, officially, for the first weekend in May! If you’d like to become a trip leader, this is a key component! It’ll be a grand ol’ time in Acadia with your two resident lanky gingers.
  • Secretary and Treasurer platforms: these will be do this coming Sunday, to be read aloud at the meeting. Please email the current K-Council your platform beforehand at [email protected]. Merci.

Aspirations of the team:

  • Sam and Hannah are going to Jordan Pond in Acadia
  • Gregory and Nathaniel (Gregory’s LAST TRIP LEAD FOR THE COC) will also be heading to Acadia! Congrats to Gregory for a stellar COC leading career.
  • Dylan and Spencer (with safe avy friend) will potentially be doing Tuck’s this weekend (Friday-Saturday)…not official COC trip but get in touch with them if you want in!
  • Further Ahead:
    • Carina wants to hike the Bigelows during reading period.
    • Owens wants to do some sort of backpacking during reading period.

A BIENTOT MES AMIS.

¡Minutes Return to the Blog! (spring break yip YIP)

HOWDY! After tending to some technical difficulties, the minutes return to the blog!

Spring Break Trips were thusly epic (in brief):

St. John – sea turtles, octopus, sting ray, hiked up hills, twisty roads, bugs, sunburns, WILD WHITE MULE (sickly), bird thieves, burritos, rice and jam, spam, B, S, N!

Big Bend – we went up really fast and it was tiring, and then we went down, and then we went up again. Much wind, tent blankets, rattlesnake fear insomnia, deer, ghost town (“not a lot going on there”), a rodeo (“sam got asked to dance by a real girl!”) B, S, T, N (a solid amount).

Puerto Rico hostel, enterprise difficulties,  rainforest (it rained), post 6 pm badassery, moonlit hikes in a stream, highest mountain in PR, insane views, B, S, T, N!

Zion – it was perfect. it was awesome. sunrise, sunset. “risky climbing,” much sweat, yum yum of spam, river swims, John thought he lost the car but he ran to the wrong parking lot. B, S, T, N

ADK/Whites – Tasteful, ratchet, meat stick (lost on 1st day, found on 3rd! Hallelujah!), macaroni, AMC huts, mixed nuts container. Adirondacks didn’t convince john…B, S, T (wind), N!

***Please stay tuned for forthcoming epic blog posts by all of our Spring Break Trips.

Winter isn’t Coming, it’s Here

MINUTES FROM SUNDAY NOVEMBER 2nd’s MEETING, IN CASE YA MISSED IT:

First and foremost, it SNOWED TODAY!! The COC celebrated accordingly (see Owen’s eloquent account on our Facebook page).

Trip Reports: Due to the seasonal transition, we didn’t have many official trips go out this week, but many folks still enjoyed Maine this week!

Spencer skied on Mt. Runnals and Lorimer Hill!! Gettin’ after it, as expected.

Ben took out his canoe on Ellis pond, and found some “cool old stuff” including a rock with a golden triangle on it. Send conspiracy theories to [email protected] please.

Hannah Lafleur and Nate Eberly, both graduates of Colby class of 2011, were here to present about job opportunities with Overland Summers, but they also got outside this week! They hiked the Kinsmans in NH! Way to be.

Owens tried to enjoy the snow, but was unfortunately hit in the face with a snowball from very close range.  Her vision is recovering, but if you see her wish her well!

Seth and friends enjoyed the COC cabin this weekend…so they didn’t really get outside, but we’ll still count it.

Gretchen gave a couple haircuts outside, and a snowball came inside Miller Library. So some crazy activities happening in unexpected places!!!!!!!

Grace wants to hike on Saturday or Sunday (see email from Grace, Lidia, or Teddy with details)

Seth will be stacking wood and setting up lines in the sugarbush (behind the Alumni Center) on Thursday!

Leader Training Trip THIS WEEKEND:

As a part of our new Leadership process (see below) we will be holding leader training trips this coming weekend, going to Acadia!!!!

Leadership Process:

  1. Interest inventory / survey.  A way to connect with the Trip Facilitation Committee Heads, and decide the role you want to play as a COC leader.
  2. Shadow a trip.  Not assessed in any way, and not an official co-lead, but merely getting acclimated to the process of being a trip leader.
  3. Wilderness Advanced First Aid (at Colby Nov. 14th and 15th, otherwise look into WMA and SOLO programs nearby!)
  4. Leader Training Trip.  Establishes a curriculum that gives COC leaders a common curriculum for hard and soft skills when leading a COC trip.
  5. Co-lead (can happen prior to Training Trip). Evaluated co-lead of a COC trip, based on certain skills necessary (pre and post trip logistics, group dynamics, etc.)
  6. Interview. Not figuring out whether you’re qualified, but rather a final check in to see how the process was, and to establish your role as a COC leader moving forward!

Events Happening on Campus:

Friday at 5pm in Dana, we’re teaming up with the CAs. Sign up to head an activity here: https://docs.google.com/a/colby.edu/spreadsheets/d/1bzfUDlFc7YNkzSHsQzxWxtbCdLAWEdfRAxh5nC1A5pk/edit?usp=sharing_eid

Trip Reports: Where We’ve Been

Carina, Kat, and Carolyn summited South and North Crocker, near Sugarloaf! They particularly enjoyed the sun’s presence.

Ryan and crew went fly-fishing! A few fish were caught, and a great time was had on the second trip of COOTober!

Seth biked 30 miles of the carriage trails in Acadia with some friends from home, which sounded nice.

Cat, John, Buck, et al hiked Burnt Moutain and it was icy apparently, with an early onset of winter?!

Molly, Kat, and John slept on Runnals and saw an awesome sunrise Saturday morning!

Gregory, Cassandra, Parwana and team went to Cutler Coast for the sunrise, but instead enjoyed the sky slowly get brighter. There was some nudity, so congratulations to them!

Drew got his SCUBA cert in Belgrade this weekend, and yes there are still fish in Belgrade! Enjoy it before the acidification sets in!! #climatechange
