Jews and Sports

Picture 10 of 18

Many Jews became active participants in Maine’s sports-oriented youth culture. Teddy Shiro (first row, third from left) helped lead the 1944 Waterville youth basketball team to a New England title. Even though many Jews reported that they were the focus of discrimination or name-calling during their participation in sports, being a member of a team was important for young Jewish Mainers.
