Johnny “Dutch” Levine and the 1905 Yale football team

Picture 11 of 18

Many of Maine’s Jewish boys were dedicated to sports. Few, however, displayed the talent of Waterville’s “Dutch” Levine, who played football in exhibition games around the country. Yale’s coaches recruited him illegally as their secret weapon in the 1905 championship game against Harvard. Dutch won the game after running the ball on eleven consecutive plays. Dutch is sitting in the third row back, in the second seat from the left.
