Maine’s first lodge of B’nai B’rith, a national Jewish fraternal organization, included members not only from Portland but also from Saco, Lewiston, Waterville, and Bangor. B’nai B’rith established the Portland area’s first Jewish cemetery, in Cape Elizabeth, in 1875. It also provided financial support to needy widows and organized religious services for the High Holidays.
