在中国人的各种家庭关系当中，婆媳关系大概是其中最复杂、最微妙的。从汉乐府长诗《孔雀东南飞》到如今热映的影视作品及不断出版的婆媳书，比如《双面胶》《婆婆来了》等作品基本上引发了全民的一番热议，都可以见证“两个女人之间，想说爱你不容易”的坎坷路程。不管是历史遗留问题也好，还是某种观念冲突，至少可以反映出国人在亲情价值观上发生的一些根本性的转变。

Early in the morning, an army of older workers descend onto Beijing’s streets, rummaging through bins for recyclable materials. Plastic bottles can be sold for 1 mao (less than $0.02). For many older Chinese people, this is their retirement plan. The basic pension is just 55 yuan ($8.75) a month, forcing thousands to collect rubbish to make ends meet. Continue reading

‘Granny” Li has attempted suicide three times. First, she tried to gas herself by leaving the oven turned on, but her neighbors smelled the gas and intervened. The second time she took an overdose of sleeping pills, and on the third she jumped into a deep pond and tried to drown herself. However, Li’s now-vigilant neighbors saved her on those occasions too.
