What’s for Dinner?

Meals are an important part of one’s daily routine aboard the Melville (and everywhere else!).  There are several important rules to be aware of in the messhall of a ship:

  1. Arrive on time.  Meal times while at sea are: breakfast 0730-0815, lunch 1130-1215, and dinner 1700-1800.  If you miss the allotted time to dine, you’re left hoping that there will be leftovers in the fridge, but there are no guarantees. Continue reading

Tour de Melville

I have had many family and friends asking me what the room I’m staying in is like, so I decided to show you my room, and the other places where I spend time relaxing on the Melville.  When we arrived on the Melville in Punta Arenas, we received room assignments.  I was assigned to share a room with Brittney, a senior at Western Washington State, on the second platform.  After winding our way through the maze of passages and stairwells in the ship, we finally found our stateroom. Lucky Melville – We made it with 11 hours to spare!

Readers may recall the we left the dock in Punta Arenas at 1 PM local time on January, 11, 2011.   While we were waiting to leave we had been hearing rumors that the citizens of the Magallanes Provence were threatening to strike over a 20% increase in oil prices.   What we didn’t know at the time was that we went to sea with only 11 hours to spare.   Starting at midnight on January 12 a general strike was called that effectively blocked all roads, Continue reading
