John Lee was born into a family that placed a strong emphasis on education. His mother attended Jinling Women’s College (金陵女子大学), one of the earliest institutions for higher education for women in China, while his father studied at University of Shanghai (沪江大学). This intellectual and academic environment played a formative role in shaping his values and lifelong commitment to learning.
