For John Lee, education was never separated from the larger political and cultural transformations unfolding around him. Raised in missionary schools and internationally connected universities in Republican China, John developed a fluency in English and familiarity with American culture that distinguished him from many of his generation. These experiences eventually led to a chance encounter with Peter Mills, a U.S. Navy officer whose mentorship would profoundly shape the course of his life. Yet John’s educational journey also unfolded during the final years of the Chinese Civil War, as growing political instability forced many young Chinese intellectuals to reconsider their futures. Through letters, friendships, and mounting uncertainty about the direction of China, John ultimately made the difficult decision to leave his home country and continue his education at Colby College in the United States.
