CAPS Science Activities:
The Science Modules are the core of the CAPS Program. Colby faculty and staff plan a wide range of modules that reflect the diverse range of science experiences available to Colby students, and each of which adds new expertise that will be useful in your science curriculum regardless of major. All CAPS Scholars participate collaboratively in all modules. Near the end of the program, students present their work at the CUSRR – the all-campus Colby Undergraduate Summer Research Retreat.
Fun and Exploration!:
Dates: CAPS Scholars arrive on campus at the end of June or beginning of July and spend (four/six?) weeks on campus, returning home for …august..
Cost: All expenses are paid by the program: travel to and from campus, room and board, on- and off-campus activities and outings, etc. In addition, CAPS Scholars earn a stipend and one academic credit for their participation.
Lodging: CAPS Scholars stay together in one of Colby’s dorms with a student CA – often a more senior CAPS Scholar. Summer is an active time at Colby, with hundreds of students remaining on campus to work or conduct research, and various courses and conferences hosted on campus.
Transportation to/from Colby: Whether you are flying in or driving/being driven, your expenses will be paid by the program, and the CAPS Program Coordinator will assist you with travel arrangements.
What to Bring:
CUSRR:
Selecting Courses for Fall: CAPS Scholars receive hands-on, in-person academic advising from the two CAPS Directors – Professors Cathy Bevier (Biology) and Jeff Katz (Chemistry).
After the Summer Program: Once you are a part of the CAPS Community, you are a part of the community for all four years and beyond! For many Scholars, some of their closest Colby friendships began with CAPS. The CAPS Coordinator will plan a variety of events throughout the year – group study sessions, outings and trips, study breaks, speakers, dinners, and, ultimately, the grand CAPS Graduation Ceremony! You will meet and be mentored by more senior CAPS Scholars, and you will become a mentor yourself for new Scholars as you move along in your Colby career.
