As a neuroscience student, I’ve spent years hearing that the brain uses about 20% of the body’s energy despite being only a small percentage of our mass. I accepted that as an interesting fact, but I never really understood why the brain is such an energy-intensive organ.
The part that clicked most was realizing that neurons don’t store their own fuel. They rely almost entirely on a continuous supply of glucose, and the ATP that keeps them functioning is almost entirely generated through oxidative phosphorylation. I knew action potentials required ion gradients, but I didn’t appreciate that maintaining those Na⁺/K⁺ gradients through pumps that require ATP to function is what burns the majority of the brain’s energy. When we covered the electron transport chain and ATP synthase, it hit me how much has to happen at the mitochondrial level just to reset a single neuron after it fires.
When I connected this to my own mental fatigue I started to understand this on a personal level. On days when I’ve studied for hours or skipped meals, I could feel my thinking slow down. Before biochemistry, I chalked that up to being tired or stressed. But now I understand that when glucose availability drops, neurons feel it immediately because they can’t compensate by burning fatty acids the way other tissues can.
Another thing that stood out to me was how vulnerable neurons are during metabolic disruptions. In neurophysiology we talk about hypoxia and ischemia, but learning biochemically that when the ETC stalls ATP production collapses and ion gradients decay makes the connection much more concrete. It started to make much more sense why even brief interruptions in oxygen can cause such rapid neurological symptoms. This unit also clarified why disorders involving mitochondrial dysfunction often present with neurological problems. The brain just can’t tolerate inefficiencies in ATP production, it has no other option but to slow or shut down. Overall, understanding biochemically how neurons generate and use energy filled a gap in my knowledge that I hadn’t really considered until now.
