Driving
Boats to the islands leaves from Port Clyde, ME, which is 1 hour 45 minutes away from Colby. Carpooling is strongly encouraged as summer parking in Port Clyde (Park Clyde) is limited. Directions can be found here: Colby College to Cold Storage Rd, St George, ME 04860 – Google Maps.
Parking/Unloading
Colby reserves 4 parking spots at the private Monhegan Boat Lines parking lot. There is a Lower lot and an Upper lot — see the map below for more details. Parking spots will be assigned before each trip departure. If you need help, there is an attendant that can direct you to the right place.
The Island Campus boat — The Otherworld — will be docked in front of the Port Clyde General Store. There is a wheelbarrow next to the propane tanks on the west side of the General Store to help move gear to the gear staging area on the main dock (please do not move gear onto the gas dock until you are loading the boat). Day-use, public parking is available on the stone jetty west of the General Store, but limit the use of these spaces for loading and unloading only.
Due to the fire at the Port Clyde General Store, boat loading and unloading details are changing on a weekly basis. Please email [email protected] for current departure locations.
Map of parking and boat dock. Please be aware that we are guest on the Port Clyde General Store docks. Please load and unload as efficiently as possible to keep the docks open for other customers. A gear storage area is designated on the map to allow unloading of vehicles prior to the boat’s arrival.
Boat Runs
Sailing to Allen Island takes about 30 minutes. The Island Campus boat, a converted lobster boat, has a capacity of 15 passengers. While the boat will not run if the seas are unsafe, it can navigate rough waters, and the ride can be bumpy at times. Passengers are encouraged to bring warm and water-insulated clothing.
