Exploring Korean Identity in America

November 4, 2025

Interviewee: Dr. Kue Choi

Interviewer: Jayden Grier

Interview Summary

My interviewee is Dr. Kue Choi. He is an anesthesiologist operating out of Rhode Island, living in Massachusetts. He was born in Pusan, South Korea, and he and his family immigrated to St. Louis, Missouri, in 1970, when he was a little over three years old. He identifies as Korean even though he has lived in the United States for most of his life.

This interview talks about topics such as identity, values, and relationships. DC discussed his values at length during the interview, how he balances the Korean values from his parents, and the values he has developed living in America. He also discussed the identity crisis he suffered when he went to college, and how that related to other Koreans he knows. We talk about his current relationship with the Korean, about why he hasn’t gone back, but how he wants to soon.

My interviewee is the father of one of my high school friends. We had met 1-2 times before we did our interview over the phone.  This interview was conducted by Jayden Grier, a third-year Sociology major at Colby College, who is interested in learning about different histories around the world.
