This interview is with Jaeik Lee, born December 17, 1974 in Seoul, South Korea. Lee describes his experiences growing up in 1970s and 1980s Korea as well as his time in the United States after his move in 2006. Furthermore, Lee elaborates on the role that age and gender played in his life and in Korean society in general. As the eldest son in a traditional Korean family, Lee has an interesting point of view of Korean society and customs. Lee also grew up during a time of great political change in Korea, as Park Chung Hee’s regime came to end and Chun Doo Hwan’s regime began. Additionally, this was also a period of great social, cultural, and economic change. This interview covers topics on age, gender, culture, religion, and education. The interviewee is my father, and we conducted the interview in our home. This interview was conducted by Eunho Lee, a student at Colby with an interest in History.
Jaeik Lee was born in Seoul, South Korea on December 17, 1974. Lee grew up as the eldest son in his family with his mother, father, and younger brother. After going through the Korean education system, Lee attended Yonsei University, where he met his wife, Myungeun Kim. In 2006, Lee immigrated to the United States with his wife and three children arriving the following year. In the United States, Lee attended Boston University Dental School. Lee is also an active member of the Korean church of Boston, and Christianity has been a significant pillar throughout his entire life. Lee currently lives in Weston, Massachusetts.
