Thomas Mikkelson (1921–79) graduated from the Minneapolis School of Art in 1949 and subsequently studied in Paris. That same year, on the invitation of Margaret Blake and the Skowhegan School faculty, Mikkelson painted frescoes on the south wall of the South Solon Meeting House. After living in Alexandria, Minnesota, Mikkelson moved with his family to Fergus Falls, Minnesota, where he managed Vernon Studios, regularly exhibiting at the Kilbride-Bradley Art Gallery in Minneapolis, Minnesota (the gallery operated from 1959 through 1980).
