Brown in Cuba
Fall 2012
Dear Colby,
My name is Carey Powers and I graduated from Colby in 2014. I’m writing you to say how thankful to you and the study abroad team at Colby. When I came to your office in 2011 to talk about studying in Cuba, you were so excited and you helped me figure out which programs would be best. I ended up going on the Brown in Cuba program in the fall of 2012 and it was perfect. My 4 months in Havana were life-changing, and when Obama made his announcement about relaxing restrictions with Cuba in 2014, I knew I had to be a part of this moment.
Tomorrow I leave for Cuba again, but this time as a staff member at Cuba Educational Travel , a job I started a few weeks ago. I’m based in DC but I will travel to Cuba to assist clients on people-to-people trips. It’s an amazing opportunity!
When I tell people that I studied in Havana they are so shocked- and this interaction is a reminder to me of what Colby stands for- pushing the boundaries of education and making sure students aren’t shut down for having outlandish ideas.
Thanks again for all that you and your team do!
