Hello Family and Friends!  As promised, I will be keeping track of my little happenings for the next four months as I travel literally across the globe. In consideration of your time and interests as a reader, I will be dividing my posts up with subheadings–that way you can pick and choose what snippets you want to read and skip others to satisfy your heart’s desire.

For the Academic Folk:  Many of you have asked me what I’m going to be studying this semester and I have (to my own embarrassment) given at best subpar answers. In an attempt to make reparations, I will summarize the overarching academic approach to my study of Health, Community, and Care. There are 3 main areas of study, which are Public Health, Globalization, and Anthropology. Largely implementing a comparative method of understanding (between the US, Vietnam, South Africa, and Argentina) that both analyzes the complexity of issues surrounding health in a global context and interrogates the systems of power that embed these issues, we (as a student learning community in solidarity with those whom we meet along the way) will investigate feasible and practical solutions to stark global health inequities. *In a nutshell, we are studying how we can address global disparities in a cross-cultural context. While it is foolish to think that we will come up with all the answers, hopefully we will learn to ask better questions that push the boundaries of what we can imagine and envision as real solutions.
