Made You Look: A True Story About Fake Art, 2020

Made You Look: A True Story About Fake Art is a documentary on the Knoedler art gallery scandal which amounted to 80 million dollars of forged artworks sold over 14 years (1994–2008). The documentary traces the key figures in the scandal; Ann Freedman, President of Knoedler gallery; Glafira Rosales, the dealer who brought the works to Ann Freedman; Jose Carlos Bergantiños, Glafira’s boyfriend at the time and convicted art criminal; Pei-Shen Qian, the artist of the forgeries; Michael Hammer, owner of Knoedler; and the collectors and lawyers involved in the scandal. The evidence of the scandal is presented by chronologically tracing how the position of the artworks developed from new treasures to disreputable frauds. By confronting the grey area of innocence and guilt in the scandal, Made You Look leaves its audience questioning who were the victims in the Knoedler art forgery scandal and who were the members of the guilty party.
