Beltracchi: The Art of Forgery is an engaging and thoughtful examination of the life and work of art forger Wolfgang Beltracchi. This documentary discusses many of the characteristics of successful forgeries, making it a great introduction into the world or forging art. Beltracchi’s process is followed as he shops for old materials at flea markets, conducts research, paints, and produces a convincing “provenance trap” (creating fake old photographs of a gallery with his forgery hanging in the back). Perspectives from art historians, conservation scientists, art dealers, collectors, Wolfgang Beltracchi himself, his wife, friends, daughter, and son make this a well-rounded film that touches on many of the consequences of and opinions about art forgery. Filmed after the exposure and downfall of Beltracchi as he moves out of his mansion soon to be liquidated, the documentary juxtaposes a lost life of luxury with the real consequences of breaking the law.
