The Shroud of Turin

Shroud of Turin, 14th century. Linen. Turin, Italy: Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist.

The Shroud of Turin is believed by many to be the authentic burial cloth of Jesus Christ and to show the imprint of his face and body. However, provenance, iconography, and carbon dating place the origin of the shroud in the early 14th century, making its claim to be the burial cloth of Jesus Christ impossible. Despite the evidence that disproves the authenticity of the shroud, when the relic is shown in Turin it draws enormous crowds of onlookers willing to believe its story and its significance as the burial cloth of Jesus.
