John Linton Stuart and his wife, Mary Louisa Horton, went on a Southern Presbyterian mission in Hangzhou, China, in 1874. Mary Louisa Horton founded the first girls’ school, Zhencai Girls School, in Hangzhou in 1867. In 1912, the three girls’ schools in Hangzhou, founded respectively by the Southern Presbyterian, Northern Presbyterian, and Northern Baptist missionaries, were combined and named Union (Hongdao) Girls School. Hongdao (弘道) is brought from the Analects states: “It is man who can broaden the Way (Dao).” Here, the meaning is extended to imply that the Way of Jesus Christ shall be glorified and expanded within China.
