Reflection 2: Harp seals + fat metabolism

In elementary school one of my absolute favorite animals was the harp seal. I created many presentations on these seals, but I never really understood the biochemistry behind their ability to survive in the frigid saltwater of the North Atlantic and Arctic Oceans. The lecture on fat metabolism, and more specifically the beta-oxidation pathway, made me realize just how much energy is stored if fat (and blubber). I was surprised to learn that beta-oxidation produces 6.6 ATP molecules per carbon compared to 5.3 ATP molecules per carbon for glucose. Furthermore, harp seals live in the ocean, so they struggle to find freshwater which is essential for survival. Fortunately, a byproduct of the beta-oxidation reaction is water, which allows these seals to have available freshwater without needing to get it from their environment. Lastly, I find it fascinating that the same mechanism that allows seals to survive in the arctic also helps so many other animals survive in their own unique environments. For example, the same beta-oxidation reaction helps camels survive in the desert, monarch butterflies migrate across North America, and bears hibernate in the winter.

    This is really interesting, Shayna. I find it fascinating that different animals can be so different but have incredibly similar metabolic processes. I also find it interesting that different environments, especially considering how different camels and seals are they both use the same method of beta-oxidation.

    This application about what we learned about fat metabolism and ATP production to harp seal survival is fascinating! It really is super interesting that beta-oxidation both allows for so much energy to be stored as fat/blubber, with 6.6 ATP per carbon which as you pointed out is more than the 5.3 per carbon for glucose, and also for production of freshwater in completely saltwater environments like the North Atlantic and Arctic Oceans where harp seals live. I am a big fan of animals, so I also enjoyed how you mention how beta-oxidation is crucial for camels, monarch butterflies, and bears as well. This also has me wondering if harp seals use uncoupler proteins to generate heat in such cold water, or if it is mainly their blubber that keeps them insulated.

    I also think that it is really interesting how fat metabolism helps all these animals and allows sea animals to get fresh water in addition to energy. I agree that it’s so cool that such different animals all use the same processes to survive in their own environments.
