Punishment Disparities Between White And Black Students
It is no surprise to read that black males get arrested and charged for longer periods of time then white makes do. So is it that absurd to hear that black male students get suspended and punished harder than white male students in public school systems? I think it is and if you look into some data you can see just how extreme the results actually are!
In this graph what you see is students getting suspended from school by race and gender, as well as disability. What it shows is that white people make up 50.3% of the data while black people make up only 15.5% of the data. Boys and girls are split between 51.4% and 48.6%, and disability vs non disability, makes up 11.7% with, and 88.3% without. Black male students make up 15% of the data but make up 38.7% of the suspensions in the school. This is compared to white male students who make up 50.3% of the data but get suspended only 33.5% out of the entire percent of students who get suspended! This is surprising because of how close the suspension rates are but how small of a population it is that the suspensions are coming from. This just shows exactly how much of a difference black students get punished from their white peers, and it is just sad to see how great the gap is from this aspect.
Some of this data can be caused so to the beliefs that some people carry with them about Black students and Black people in general. In a video I will put under the blog, you can see one women share her gross opinions about Black people and Black makes especially in America and how they are.
A congress woman named Betsy DeVos, believes that Black people are inherently more violent and are due to act up in school and are prone to behind more roughly than their white peers, and believes that this is why they get punished more than white students, and that it is correct that this is going on. DeVos beloved that starting from young ages Black people learn to be more violent and aggressive and that’s why they act up in school, she also says that this is why head start and pre school is all nonsense and won’t work to solve that gap.
It is ideas like this that make and keep the world segregated and keep young kids from fully achieving dreams and goals that they should rightfully carry out. This is what keep Black Americans down and make it so hard for young Black students to flourish and see that they have true potential to do great things with their lives. If we could work on figuring out how to change the believes that some people have and work on making things truly equal and fair then we can get closer to solving the gap in our education system.
