These teams fall into the following categories: men&#8217;s, women&#8217;s, Jack-and-Jill, or alumni. Each team&#8217;s results are compared only with those within its category. (For example, the scores of the Colby women are only rated against those of the other college women&#8217;s teams.)<\/h5>\n<h5>Here are explanations of the events that take place at a typical woodsmen&#8217;s meet. Remember kids: don&#8217;t try this at home!<\/h5>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h1><span style=\"color: #0000ff\">\u00a0Events<\/span><\/h1>\n<table style=\"width: 633px;height: 100px\" border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr style=\"height: 92px\" align=\"center\">\n<td style=\"height: 92px;width: 24.6px\" scope=\"col\" align=\"left\" valign=\"top\">\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/woodsmen\/files\/2014\/05\/axe_throw_tn.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-105 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/woodsmen\/files\/2014\/05\/axe_throw_tn-150x127.jpg\" alt=\"axe_throw_tn\" width=\"150\" height=\"127\" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<td style=\"height: 92px;width: 519.4px\" align=\"left\" valign=\"top\"><span style=\"font-size: small\"><strong>Axe Throw:\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0The objective is to hit the bull&#8217;s eye on a target about fifteen feet away with a double headed axe.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small\">In competition, the thrower is typically given one practice throw and then three more that count. The closer your axe is to the bull&#8217;s eye, the higher your score on each throw.\u00a0<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"height: 116px\">\n<td style=\"height: 116px;width: 24.6px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/woodsmen\/files\/2014\/05\/DSCN5199.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-97 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/woodsmen\/files\/2014\/05\/DSCN5199-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"DSCN5199\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<td style=\"height: 116px;width: 519.4px\" align=\"left\" valign=\"top\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: small\">Bow Saw:\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: small\">Bow saw is both a team event and a singles event.\u00a0 When it&#8217;s a singles event, it is also known as\u00a0&#8220;super swede.&#8221;\u00a0 Super swede asks for a competitor to cut a number of cookies (normally 2 for women and 4 for men).\u00a0\u00a0This requires a mastery of sawing technique, as well as strength, and the ability to efficiently set\u00a0the saw on the wood.\u00a0 Team bow saw asks for each member of the team to cut one cookie each.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"height: 92px\">\n<td style=\"height: 92px;width: 24.6px\">\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/woodsmen\/files\/2014\/05\/DSCN5195.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-102 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/woodsmen\/files\/2014\/05\/DSCN5195-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"DSCN5195\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<td style=\"height: 92px;width: 519.4px\" scope=\"col\" align=\"left\" valign=\"top\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: small\">Birling:<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: small\">\u00a0This can take many forms, there is usually dry land birling or water birling. In dry land birling two competitors try to run the other person off the log in a double elimination competition. In water birling one competitor runs on the log either for time or rotations.\u00a0<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"height: 139px\">\n<td style=\"height: 139px;width: 24.6px\">\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/woodsmen\/files\/2014\/05\/733836_10151378932687507_84310522_n.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-103 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/woodsmen\/files\/2014\/05\/733836_10151378932687507_84310522_n-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"733836_10151378932687507_84310522_n\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<td style=\"height: 139px;width: 519.4px\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: small\">Crosscut sawing:\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: small\">This is one of the classic lumberjack events, where speed, concentration and strength all come together. In the crosscut (or two-person) saw event, competitors must use the saw to cut two cookies from a mounted log. Good communication with your partner is crucial, though a sharp saw will also help. Competitors lose time or risk disqualification if they &#8220;cut out&#8221; (i.e. having the saw exit the log at an angle, without having cut all the way down it.)<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"height: 69px\">\n<td style=\"height: 69px;width: 24.6px\">\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/woodsmen\/files\/2014\/05\/single_buck_tn.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-106 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/woodsmen\/files\/2014\/05\/single_buck_tn-150x127.jpg\" alt=\"single_buck_tn\" width=\"150\" height=\"127\" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<td style=\"height: 69px;width: 519.4px\" scope=\"col\" align=\"left\" valign=\"top\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: small\">Single Buck:\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: small\">Another critical lumber-jacking skill, single buck requires strength, endurance and technique. A log begins at the top of a stanchion and is then rolled down a ramp by a pair of competitors. Once on the ground, the log must be rolled to touch two pegs.\u00a0 After the pegs are touched, the process is reversed and the log must go back up the ramp. No part of the competitor&#8217;s body can touch the log at any time.\u00a0 Once the log is returned to the beginning, the peaveys are handed to\u00a0the next pair and it is repeated.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"height: 92px\">\n<td style=\"height: 92px;width: 24.6px\">\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/woodsmen\/files\/2014\/05\/67040_10153419422235245_130870335_n.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-115 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/web.colby.edu\/woodsmen\/files\/2014\/05\/67040_10153419422235245_130870335_n-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"67040_10153419422235245_130870335_n\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<td style=\"height: 92px;width: 519.4px\" scope=\"col\" align=\"left\" valign=\"top\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: small\">Pulp Toss:\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: small\">The goal of team pulp toss is to throw 4 pulp logs to a total of 48. This is done with 3 team members on either side of a pit that ranges from 15 to 20 feet long. Each member throws the 4 logs, and they only count towards the total of 48 if the log crosses the plane of the stakes. This is done by placing the log horizontally in a station and chopping in between the feet. Pole heights range from 28 feet to 40 feet in height. Competitors are given between 16 and 18 inches of 6&#215;6&#8243; wood to balance as many cookies as possible. Using hatchets, competitors build a fire and boil the water in the can as fast as they can. The first is quarter split, in which competitors are given 2 logs each with a spray painted circle in the middle. Competitors must split the logs and finish with at least 4-full length pieces with spray paint on them from each log. The other\u00a0splitting event is barrel split, in which competitors must split 2 logs to be\u00a0small\u00a0enough to fit through a hole in a barrel.
