She remembers fondly having spent a great deal of time there from age twelve through the end of high school. So it seems only fitting that today she would be executive director at the Opera House she dedicated so much of her youth to.

Warner described her journey to becoming executive director, which happened only in late January as something that has “really just… made sense.” She studied theater at University of Connecticut—the time spent as a student there the only period of her life she has lived outside of Waterville. Warner said that she has never wanted to be on Broadway, though many theater students do. She always wanted to do regional theater.

When Warner graduated from the University of Connecticut, she moved back home, missing her family and her town. She loves Waterville and Maine because of the safety, the beauty, and the community it offers. Now she lives downtown, a five-minute walk away from work.

When she started working at the Opera House out of college, she was just painting and stage managing. As time progressed, she began filling more and more roles, learning about the financial and business aspects of the job. Though leaving college she had certainly not planned on becoming executive director, it became clear that it was the right job for her, and she was the right person for the job.

Now, Warner has many responsibilities. She does the budgeting, fundraising, financial planning, overseeing daily operations, and coordinating performers who rent the space to make sure their concerts and performances run smoothly. The Opera House hosts concerts, film screenings, and theater performances, and Warner makes sure that all of these happen without problems. She describes her job as “a lot of little stuff that you don’t think about, that adds up to a lot more than forty hours a week.”

Warner works hard for the Opera House, and knows it intimately. She jokes with coworkers that they could “navigate the theater in the pitch black.” Her dedication to the Opera House stems from a dedication to the arts in general. She believes the arts are central to making life more than just “survivable.” When she enters any new city, the arts tend to be a key factor in what kind of impression she has of it. She likes to look at the architecture, the museums, and the theater shows. All of those arts and culture factors play a huge role in the opinion she forms of the city.

If someone like Warner were to enter Waterville, judging the town largely based on its art scene, there’s a very good chance that they would be impressed. And one of the biggest reasons for that is the Waterville Opera House, an institution that has benefited greatly from Tamsen Warner’s efforts.

Tamsen Warner has been active in the Waterville Opera House since she was a child.
