She is currently living in San Jose California and is a dental hygienist working in Menlo Park California. Jen discusses the challenges of transitioning from life in Korea to her new life in the US with her siblings, separated from her parents by thousands of miles. She details the important ways that she was able to find comfort in the culturally shocking environment of the US, such as by eating dark meat noodles and other dishes that reminded her of her parents back home. Additionally, Jen details the factors that play into the emigration of Korean women in particular to the US to avoid workplace discrimination. Jen’s story highlights the factors that play into Korean immigration to the US, particularly the role of workplace discrimination against women, as well as important means that immigrant children employ to adjust to their new lives and maintain close family connections. The interview was conducted via Zoom, as Jen lives across the country in order to ease the logistical process.

The interview was conducted by Jack Hansen, a fourth-year history major at Colby College interested in the history of Europe. I am interested in the relatively untold histories in Korea and have been extremely lucky to gain new personal insights regarding the lives of Korean immigrants in the US that will help inform my thinking regarding the lives of immigrants of all backgrounds.

Jen Shyng is a dental hygienist who works in Palo Alto California. She is originally from Wonju in Gangwon-do Province, South Korea. Her experience being the child of ethnically Chinese and Japanese parents living in Korea, as well as her emigration to the United States with her two sisters provides a compelling insight into the lives of immigrant children of all origins. In particular, the personal strength of Jen and her sisters, and their ability to remain steadfast in their cultural journey is truly inspirational. This kind of strength is a reflection of the trials necessary for immigrants, and their journeys living abroad.

Interview Transcript: https://docs.google.com/document/d/e/2PACX-1vR1ILWbKwny1kuQmD5Sdb9Yng37ocV-NEi9edBqGM27iSlVR51E7mz6y6IH7kK4CfQaFHMypptCiAHV/pub

Interviewee: Jen Shyng Interviewer: Jack Hansen This interview is with Jen Shyng, born on January 20th, 1993 in the city of Wonju in Gangwon-do Province, South Korea.
