Caleb is a twenty-one-year-old from Seattle Washington. He attends the University of Washington and study’s real estate and is in multiple leadership positions for his fraternity. He is technically a first generation American although both his parents moved to America from South Korea at a very young age. Caleb and I grew up together playing baseball and sort of lost touch over the years but finally reconnected through this interview. In the interview we covered how his parents came to America, where their families settled, and what they did for a living. I learned about Caleb’s grandmother’s special recipe for chicken that is still named after her in a mercantile shop in a small coastal town in Washington. We discussed Caleb’s identity growing up as a Korean American and how he felt his identity change as he learned more about himself through high-school and college. We also discussed family tradition and he said that he plans to continue all of these traditions with his own family one day. The interview was conducted over zoom because we attend colleges on opposite sides of the country. And lastly the interview was conducted by myself, Clint Flippo and sophomore history major at Colby College.

Caleb Kim is a twenty-one-year-old born in North Creek, Washington, thirty minutes north of Seattle. Caleb is a student at the University of Washington and studying real estate. He is involved in Greek life and takes on many leadership roles. Both his parents were born in Seoul, South Korea and met each other in Seattle. They both moved to America at a very young age with their families. This interview with Caleb goes over his experience growing up in America as a Korean-American, his family, foods and tradition, and his college experience in Greek life. We also dive into Caleb’s struggle with identity and his overall experience with prejudice in Seattle.

Interview Transcript:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/e/2PACX-1vRXbbsjiTGGS_pMjdSwOhC-8wM7USC0ZtbaXNlnlmdRUAdChpKNJ3801nBF0CmJjov6-U-4iEQr06Q-/pub

Interviewee: Caleb Kim Interviewer: Clint Flippo Today I interviewed an old friend of mine, Caleb Kim.
