Sharon is currently a sophomore at Vanderbilt University, majoring in child studies and minoring in child mental health. She spent most of her life in Nashville Tennessee, but also lived in Boston, Massachusetts for five years. This interview covers the topics of identity crisis, Korean American churches, education, cultural or generational differences, and multicultural identity. Sharon talks about her experiences growing up in a predominantly white neighborhood and how she tried to fit in. She also mentioned the difference between American and Korean culture, and expresses her perspective on the Korean American church. She highlights negotiating her Korean American identity through language, family, and community or school experiences. Sharon also addresses how her identity as a Korean American shaped who she is now. During our first year at Colby, Sharon and I spent time together after meeting on admitted student day. She and I became very close friends. I conducted the interview via Zoom due to Sharon&#8217;s circumstance. She transferred schools and is no longer enrolled at Colby College. My name is Awo Agbevam, and I am a sophomore at Colby College majoring in Biology with a concentration in neuroscience and French language. Growing up, Sharon lived in Boston, Massachusetts for 5 years with a pastor\u2019s family at a Korean American church. She navigated between the Korean church community and mainstream \u201cAmerican\u201d society. Sharon acknowledges that her Korean skills are as strong as her English due to his experiences navigating her identity. She faced bullying in school, her Korean American identity crisis, and the strict environment growing up in a Korean American church. Despite the ups and downs, Sharon has reconciled her past identity struggles, reclaimed her Korean identity and formed her own relationship with her religious faith. Her home is in Nashville, Tennessee, and Sharon attends Vanderbilt University. She is a second-year student majoring in child studies and minoring in child mental health.
