My interview subject is a fourth-year student majoring in Government at Colby College. Her background as a first-generation Korean American who has studied abroad in Korea serves as the basis for the content in this interview. Her encounters with Korean food in the home and connections to her experiences abroad demonstrate shared aspects of life across the Korean diaspora. From her home life in Virginia to life in Seoul, Korean food has been an important part of her experiences.
This interview compares the Korean-American experience to the lived experiences of native Koreans. The goal is to explore the connections and presence of Korean food to Korean history, both native and diasporic.
My interviewee is a senior classmate who I was able to meet this past year through a shared course. This interview was conducted in person and on the Colby College campus. Conducted by Anela Gallegos, a Global Studies and History major at Colby College, this interview seeks to understand the relationship between Korean food culture and Korean historical experiences.
My interview subject, whose personal information has been retracted following her wishes to protect her privacy, is a fellow student at Colby College. In her senior year, she is majoring in Government with a minor in East Asian studies. She was born and raised on the east coast of the United States after her family emigrated from South Korea. As part of her studies, she spent a year abroad in Seoul National University for her junior year of college. Her background as a Korean American in relation to her experiences abroad in South Korea are the focus of this interview.
