Synopsis:
Younglang Song, a 53-year-old Korean American, was born in Seoul, South Korea, but has spent most of her life abroad, mainly in the United States, South Korea, and Saudi Arabia. Although Mrs. Song has lived in many regions throughout the United States, she currently resides in New York with her family. The interview with Mrs. Song covers topics including immigration, separation, identity, heritage, linguistic, family, food, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, and the United States. I cannot pinpoint a specific moment that I was introduced to Mrs. Song, as she is my mother and I have known her all my life, but once I learned of subject of this oral history, I knew I was interested in hearing her life story. This interview was conducted on via Facetime, from which an audio recording was completed and saved for the purpose of the interviewee.
My name is Yumi Kang, and I am a third-year History and Religious Studies double major at Colby College, and this oral history allowed me to further gain insight on myself and my own Korean immigrant family as I learned more about Mrs. Song’s Korean-immigrant experience.
Biography:
Younglang Song was born in Seoul, South Korea, in 1970. Mrs. Song was born and spent her early childhood in South Korea before moving to Saudi Arabia for a few years of her youth. Following her time in Saudi Arabia, Mrs. Song and her family immigrated to the United States, and there she stayed until she graduated from university. She then moved to South Korea where she met her husband and started her family. With her family, Mrs. Song re-immigrated to the United States, and there she lived in various states throughout the United States, until she settled down in New York where she raised her three children and is currently residing in with her husband.
