Embracing My Korean American Identity: A Conversation of Food, Religion and Cultural Practices

April 28, 2023

Interviewee: Yubin Moon

Interviewer: Claire Meng

My name is Claire Zilin Meng. I’m an international freshman at Colby College with a keen interest in Korean history since 1945. For my Korean History project, I had the pleasure of interviewing a second generation Korean American student at Colby, Yubin Moon.

During the interview, we explored her experience of navigating the interwoven cultures of Korean and American growing up in the United States. Yubin shared her unique perspective on identity formation through her experiences with food, religion, language, and career choices.

Biography:

Yubin Moon is a freshman at Colby College majoring in computer science. Her parents are originally from South Korea, but she was born in Toronto, Canada, and later moved to Solon, Ohio with her family when she was four years old. Despite growing up far from South Korea, Yubin has a strong desire to connect with her cultural roots. As a child, she regularly attended Korean church activities, including language classes and cultural events celebrating Korean festivals. She also visits Korea every four years to see her family, where she particularly enjoys the authentic Korean food that is difficult to find in the United States.
