GE128: Dangerous Earth

Course Description: Have you ever wondered why some regions suffer massive earthquakes and devastating tsunamis, while others seem relatively safe? Why some volcanoes spew fountains of lava while others explode cataclysmically? Do you want to buy a house and ensure it doesn’t succumb to a landslide? If so, this class is for you. We will explore natural hazards in the Earth system and their impacts on human lives and the environment. We’ll learn how earthquakes, volcanoes, tsunamis, floods, storms, and more make the Earth an awe-inspiring and occasionally dangerous place to live – and how humans can minimize that danger by learning how the Earth works.
